We all know that not only Mahatma Gandhi but several young revolutionary leaders fought for the Independence of India. One of the fearless revolutionary leaders was Chandra Shekhar Azad who was often known as Azad. The brave Azad tremble the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919 in which hundreds of civilians were killed by the British Army, decided to participate in the Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-co-operation Movement in 1920. Azad at the very young age is devoted towards the independence movement.

Azad was born on 23 July 1906, in the Bhavra village, in the present-day Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. His real name was Chandrashekhar Tiwari. When Chandra Shekhar was arrested in Saharanpur violence he was asked about his further personal information by the magistrate- he then gave his name as Azad, his father’s name as Swantantra and his home address as Jail. This gutsy reply of his impressed Magistrate and he gave him the designation of ‘Azad’ and he came to be known as Chandra Shekhar Azad.

His mother wanted him to be a great Sanskrit scholar and persuaded his father to send him for study Kashi Vidyapeeth at Banaras. Azad was involved in the Kakori Train Robbery of 1925 and shooting of British police officer JP Saunders at Lahore in 1928 to get the revenge of the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai.
Azad took the pledge that he will never be caught by the police alive and as sticking to this he fought a long shootout with the police at the Alfred Park in Allahabad in 1931, but when the number of armies starts getting large and he had no escape, Azad shot himself with a gun without getting caught by police.
Alfred Park, where he died on February 27, 1931, was renamed as Chandrasekhar Azad Park as a mark of tribute to the freedom fighter who had said, “Dushman ki goliyon ka hum samna karenge, Azad hi rahein hain, azad hi rahenge” which means, “We will face the bullets of enemies. We were free and we will remain free.”
Azad was fearless as it reflects in his words and the way he speaks.
Azad gave his life to the Country without thinking twice at such a young age. Azad will remain in our hearts forever and on his birth anniversary, we remember him by his quotes.
